Addressed to a Certain Queen
Authorial note - I was commissioned by two suitors to Queen Sapphire to write a love poem extolling her virtues (and not mentioning her breasts). I wrote this, and then changed the stanzas around for the second. I'm not sure that the suitors were amused, but Sapphire and I were, and that's all that matters, right?
Lines Addressed to the Woman that I Love
Before your beauty, Lady, love,
The Diamond’s mean and small,
So what use in giving gemstones?
You're fairer than them all.
The ruby fades to dull from bright,
The emerald is out-done,
For Sapphire shines the brightest light,
The others are as none.
What use is there in giving song,
It fades before your call -
I’d give you music, Lady, love,
But music is your thrall!
I hear your voice and am made whole,
To follow you’s my choice,
To hear the sounds within your soul
And always hear your voice.
There’s nothing matches you, Lady,
You are beyond rival,
I have no gifts to give you, love,
Your beauty's beyond all.
I’d beg you give me hope to live,
To take the lover’s part,
But I have only words to give,
And no words can write my heart.
