Friend
I sat alone atop a hill, a hill as high as the sky
when I met a fellow wanderer, a wandering on by.
Together we both sat and stared, stared at the world below
neither speaking to the other, the other feeling low.
Until the dark around us came, came thundering the storm
and washed us down to the little pub, the pub all lovely warm.
We ate and drank a little mead, little mead then little more
And from that day we were firm friends, firm friend whom I adore.
I met my love and married him, married him a lovely wife
we lived together side by side, side by side through strife
for our lovers both resented us, resented us our fun
for we oft did meet and sit awhile, awhile out in the sun.
But never once our thoughts did stray, did stray across the fence
we kept them home with our lovers still, our lovers thought pretence.
So far away I was a taken, a taken across the sea
to be alone with just my love, just my love and me.
Three years went by and not a word, though a word I sent each day
he never once returned my letter, my letters sent astray
my selfish love had burnt them to ash, and to ash my love did fly
when I found my love in the arms of a girl, a girl that wasn’t I.
I beat him twice about the head, the head I once had kissed
the girl she said I was no better, no better with one I missed
Fancy writing to a married man, a man who ne’er wrote to me
Twas then I learnt the awful truth, and the truth fled back to sea.
He sat alone atop a hill, a hill as high as the sky
I met him whilst I was a wandering, a wandering on by
Together we both sat and stared, stared at the world below
neither speaking to the other, the other all a glow.
Until the dark around us came, came thundering the storm
and washed us down to the little pub, the pub all lovely warm.
We ate and drank a little mead, little mead then little more
He said he’d always been my friend, my friend whom I adore.
