Golden Queen
Golden Queen, how dark, how deep shine your eyes
And what shivers and shakes your lips' curve brings;
What fear and awe when you voice cuts and rings
So soft and clear through all that lives and dies.
Golden Queen, what myst'ry in your smile lies,
What black and fretful, what frightening things!
Questions unasked, truth given terror's wings;
The honesty the mortal soul denies.
But, Lady Wisdom, you throw wide your arms
At midwinter's feast, and turn back the night;
The sun released, it turns your eyes to gold
And before your gaze our foolish fear calms -
For, when to your breast winter's death you fold,
You give us the promise of summer's light.
