Words on the Death of a Criminal
From something a woman (who wishes to remain anonymous) once confided me

I heard in passing in the pub
Those words that wrenched my heart
I tried to smile and praise the deed
I had to act the part

And when I know I am alone
My bitter tears flow
I feel my heart is breaking
But no one can ever know

I dare not read your letters now
My tears would wash them clean
You helped me see more clearly
Though your face remained unseen

Questions draw into my mind
Cause and effect unclear
I was taught to fear you
Yet you were honest and sincere

I wish I?d known you better
And laid my fears aside
All emotions simplify
I wish you had not died
