An Elf Like Thee
(Played to the tune of A Mon Like Thee – Made famous by the Haughton Weavers)
VERSE 1
There’s an old elf lives down our street
In an old and run down dwelling
And every single morning when it’s fine
I often goes and sits with him
To have a smoke and chat
Because he is a dear old friend of mine
And when it’s getting dinner time
And dinner’s ready then
I then says well I’d best be on me way
And he goes and hangs me cloak up
Right behind the owd front door
And then to my surprise I hears him say
CHORUS
Eee I’m always glad to see an elf like thee
The’d as welcome lad, as welcome as can be
Fotch thee chair right up t’table
Stop as long as thou art able
Fur I’m always glad to see an elf like thee
Verse 2
One day when I were set wi’ him I heard a loud rat-tat.
I heard a loud rat-tat on Hock’s front door
He hurried o’er to open it and there to his surprise
An hungry tattered elf just stood outside
He asked Hock for a crust of bread Hock looked him through and through
And said eh bless thee heart lad come inside
And he went and hung th’elfs cloak up right behind the old front door
And then t’elfs surprise he heard Hock say
Verse 3
That elf he did not eat a bit, but down his pale face streaming
The tears were flowing like a shower o’rain
He cried lad dost not know me dost not know thee long lost brother
These hundred years away lad back again
An I’ve only put these clothes on just me’lad to try thee
For I’m not poor but rich as any Duke
An’ the’d welcome to it all lad, thee wife and childer’ too
An’ that’s because me’lad am fond thee true
Verse 4
When Hoch he had lived long enough, it came his time to dee
So he set of on the walk to the other side
He planned on going straight across but only got halfway
He fell before and in the dell he died
His pattern was unraveling, as in the grass he lay
And slowly he returned back to the land
And the grass now feels like part of him
When on each blade I tread
And I think of him and it warm me deep inside
