Blackthorn
Voice 1 by Debreni Dupont, Voice 2 by EiKara Spinesplitter

See how she runs now; see how she runs?
Up to the tree, to the lone blackthorn tree,
Rests her cheek on the black bark, sees white flower without leaf,
And sings to the blackthorn’s Lunantishee -
She sings about freedom, she longs to escape,
She wants more than this place can make of her life,
She wants no more to sit and sing by the fire,
She wants no more to be a mother and wife –

(Chorus - Voice 1)                                                                       (Chorus - Voice 2)
We told her; we said, 'Don't court the Wild Ones!'                          Tell us your stories, your poems, your riddles
We told her; we said, 'Don't go to that tree!'                                   Sing us your darkness, play us your light
She knows that the Wild Ones take those with sweet voices,           Give us your laughter, your pain and your teardrops
And yet still she sings to the Lunantishee –                                     Share all your fears, your hopes and delight
The spark in her eye turns wild and turns feral,                               You think that we nurture you, show you and lead you
And the lilt in her laughter is madness run free,                               That we won’t steal your dreams in the darkness of night
She won’t listen when we say, 'Don't go to the blackthorn!'             But you don’t mean a thing to us, just as long as you sing to us
And she sings, still she sings, to the Lunantishee.                            For we are the Blackthorn’s Lunantishee.

See how she stares now; see how she stares?
At nothing, at all things, looks but can't see,
Her eyes seeing elsewhere and her mind faraway,
Her thoughts are still singing with the Lunantishee -
Singing of pleasures that her life here can't give her,
Singing of dreams and of joy and delight,
And the Wild Ones sing back, they sing of their world,
And of dreams and of joy and of silken twilight –

(Chorus)

See how her body lies; see how it lies?
It’s fallen so lifeless since her mind ran off free,
Her hair has turned dusty and her dress turned to rags
Since she went away with the Lunantishee -
Her daughter now under the blackthorn tree sits,
Sits and sings where all else shun and fears,
We told her what’s what, that the tree killed her mother,
But she laughs and she says that it's her voice she hears –

(Voice 1)                                                                                   (Voice 2)
She won’t listen when we say, 'Don't go to the blackthorn!'            But you don’t mean a thing to us, just as long as you sing to us
And she sings with her mother, the Lunantishee.                            For we are the Blackthorn’s Lunantishee.
