Caoimhe's Farewell

If you ask me to go for the things I have done,
I will leave, but please understand,
The choices I made, I made them for you.
For the people. For the land.
I know that I’ve not been the bright shining star,
The leader for whom you have prayed.
But I’ve done my best in these difficult times
To make sure we survived to this day.

I’ve fought for this land every day of my life
And studied the harsh ways of war.
But they always neglected to teach me of peace,
And I’ve never faced it before.
I’ve wrestled with treaties and bargains and lies,
The diplomats twist like a worm.
Well a sword is no use when you battle with words,
And no armour will shield you from scorn.

I turn to my council to hear their advice,
But they cannot be found on this shore.
Brighter attractions distracted their eyes,
They remain on their homeland no more.
And yet they condemn the decisions I’ve made,
They cry I’m not fit to command.
But where was their voice when I needed it most?
When it seemed that our island was damned.

So I will step down, if that is your will
With a smile in my heart for I know
That despite all the things that have happened to us,
You’re alive to ask me to go.
