He Moved Through the Fayre
For Dougie MacFinn

My love, I said to him, my clan they won't mind,
And my friends they won't slight you for your lack of kind
But he stepped away from me and this he did say
It never can be, love, be our wedding day.

He stepped away from me, and he moved through the fayre,
And fondly I watched him fight here and drink there,
He staggered his way bedward with one star awake,
And I thought that a lie to me he never would make.

The people were saying that his clan never wed,
But I have a sorrow 'cause he never said,
Another had won him to whom he did swear
That she one day for ever would be his true dear.

I dreamt it last night that my true love came in,
So softly he came to confess me his sin,
For his dear love had left him and this she did say;
It never can be, love, be our wedding day.
