Homeward

With the violence and fear of the battle behind me,
The blood and the pain just a bad memory.
The fields are ripening, home is beckoning,
And my dear bonny sweetheart is waiting for me.

I left as a farmhand, no future before me.
I return as a hero with sword and with shield.
The scars on my body are badges of honour,
Though the scars on my soul will never quite heal.
I know when I gaze at my sweethearts dear face,
The pain and the nightmares will all fade away.
With soft words of love she will banish my torment
And soothe me to sleep at the end of the day.

With the violence and fear of the battle behind me,
The blood and the pain just a bad memory.
The fields are ripening, home is beckoning,
And my dear bonny sweetheart is waiting for me.

The wages I earned as a mercenary soldier,
Now hang with a comforting weight by my side.
I’ve money enough now to buy a shall farmhouse
And there make my dear bonny sweetheart my bride.
The dreams that sustained me through dark times of warfare
Are now spread before me like jewels in the sun.
With each mile my homeland grows steadily closer,
And there I will rest now my battles are done.

With the violence and fear of the battle behind me,
The blood and the pain just a bad memory.
The fields are ripening, home is beckoning,
And my dear bonny sweetheart is waiting for me.
