Mother's Son
Gminor
Somewhere a woman weeps
Bbmajor
Eyes to burnt with tears to sleep
Cminor Dminor
Through she cries, her heart is numb
Gminor
In her mind she sees a child
Bbmajor
Quick to grin and humour wild
Cminor Gminor
Ne'er again to see the sun
Bbmajor
For where once he her heart fed
Fmajor
Cold earth only now his bed
Gminor Cminor Dminor
Past, departed, gone
Gminor
And beyond the fortress walls
Bbmajor
Every bloodied blade that falls
Cminor Gminor
Takes away a mother's son
Somewhere a father cries
Why him and not me who died?
I have lived, but he is young
Now he'll never live to see
His own sons dream they'll be free
Nor across the plateau run
His proud future that I saw
Scattered 'fore the wind like straw
Rebuked, Rebutted, Wrong
All the dreams I held in trust
Fall to ashes now and dust
It all ends now he is gone
Somewhere the couple lie
Each evading other's eye
Find no words with which to mourn
Held tight in each other's arms
Yet neither heart does it warm
Bodies close, souls apart torn
And the noises in the street
Speak of marching heavy feet
Brave, determined, strong
Further on a mother tries
To keep tears back from her eyes
For their shields bear her own son
