The "Dauntless"

The slap of the waves ‘gainst the sides of the “Dauntless”
Rock the ship like a child in his mother’s embrace.
I stand on the crows’ nest and watch the horizon,
With the wind in my hair, and the spray on my face.

The stars guide our way across the vast ocean,
Their familiar forms shine down from above.
Tonight I will sleep in my cool swaying hammock
And dream of the shore and the woman I love.

The sailors cling firm to their old superstitions,
Mysterious tales of Poseidon’s dark realm.
The captain forbids talk of sirens and mermaids
And preaches cold science of rudder and helm.

The crewmen read signs that foretell a storm coming.
They cast watchful eyes at the dark clouds above.
Tonight I will sleep in my cool swaying hammock
And dream of the shore and the woman I love.

The strengthening wind casts the waves ever higher.
It’s easy to see this will be no mere squall.
We furl in the sails and we batten the hatches,
And pray to our Gods to deliver us all.

Unnatural darkness obscures the vast ocean
As the hail lashes down from the storm clouds above.
No time now to sleep in my cool swaying hammock
And dream of the shore and the woman I love.

Violent waves crash o’er the sides of the “Dauntless”
The deck boards made slick with the rain and the brine.
Poseidon he claimed for his sacrifice bloody,
The life of a sailor before his due time.

He grasped for a rope as the waves crashed around him.
The sea drew him down as the storm raged above.
Tonight he will sleep ‘neath the waves of the ocean
Ne’er again see the shore, or the woman he loves.
