The Knight and the Lady

In a time of fear, in misty lands
A warrior brave and true
Strode forth to seek aid for his cause
Although he knew not who

A strange world found, yet welcoming
It offered him its aid
And whilst they planned his eyes did fall
Upon a pretty maid

Two lights torn from this pleasant land
A love that could not be
Two hearts doomed by fate to beat
Alone eternally

She met his eyes and smiled at him
As she felt her heart leap
His courtly words, they pulled at her
And made her want to weep

For she had seen him in her dreams
Presentiments of woe
If she loved him then he would die
She could not let it be so

Two lights torn from this pleasant land
A love that could not be
A knight and lady doomed to be
Apart eternally

Heroic though he was in war
Wooing seemed a fearsome task
His courtly words abandoned him
For her hand he dared not ask

Then finally his patience snapped
The seeds of courage sowed
He’d ask her to become his wife
So to her arms he strode

Two lights torn from this pleasant land
A love that could not be
Two hearts doomed by fate to beat
Alone eternally

Her blood was stained across the floor
Her shattered face his hell
Whilst he in love had come for her
To killers blow she fell

With trembling hands, with breaking heart
He fought his anguished tears
Then in the room a silence fell
Her spirit had appeared

Two lights torn from this pleasant land
A love that could not be
A knight and lady doomed to be
Apart eternally

Her ghostly hand stretched forth to his
Tears coursing down her cheeks
His final chance to voice his love
And yet he could not speak

A month passed by to her requiem
He attended sorrow-bound
Then assassin struck and weeping he
Fell lifeless to the ground

Two lights torn from this pleasant land
A love that could not be
A knight and lady doomed to be
Apart eternally
