The Sailor's Wonders
To the Tune of "Scarborough Fair"
The Ancestors call me to faraway lands
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
To put down my book and serve as Their hands
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’m bound to a ship with these bright canvas sails
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
To move in the calms and stand in the gales
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
The rigging it creaks and wood groans at the seams
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
But you’d not believe the things to be seen
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’ve seen the Great Serpent that dwells far beneath
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
The inky black waters and the great reef
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’ve seen a man go insane from the sea
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
He threw himself in, and was no more seen
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’ve seen mighty tempests all purple the sky
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
Heard prayers of the hands who feared then to die
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’ve heard the Sirens sing out their sweet lure,
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
To snare us a death no healer can cure
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’ve glimpsed the locker where dead men do dwell
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
With each man a sailor ere he last fell
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
I’ve seen the pirates with swords in their teeth
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
Their black flag above them, treasure beneath
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
Now it’s eighty days since we sighted a shore
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
There’s no land to see for a hundred miles more
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
To witness such wonders is my life’s work now
And the oceans wash o’er the sides
To the Ancestors’ will I surely will bow
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
And time rolls on, on the oft-changing tides
