The Sea

Do not go back to the sea tonight,
The tide will wait one more day.
The wind is so wild in the treetops outside.
My darling, will you not stay?
But he gave me a kiss as he walked out the door,
The ship on the dockside is waiting.
And with seas rising high, they will set sail tonight,
While I wait at home, my heart aching.

I asked him to leave the sea when we were wed,
For I feared the long nights all alone.
But he couldn't get used to a life on the land,
And longed for the spray and the foam.
Well the day at last came when he signed up again
On a merchantman bound for new shores,
And I tried hard to hide the sad tears in my eyes
As I watched him sail from me once more.

To marry a sailor's a voyage of pain,
The loneliness cuts through your life.
Your hold on his heart is a mistress’s claim,
For the sea is his only true wife.
And when the storm comes that will end all his days,
She'll wash his cold body and head.
She'll be the one closes his eyes,
And lays him to rest on her bed.
