The Phoenix and the Turtle

The first river stroked the first mountain, and over silt and under steam their battle began, he of earth and water, she of fire and air. Some say they fought for a pearl, some say they fought for a girl, but they will fight until the dragon hatches, and we are all just ash and eggshells.

When the first peoples of the world came to view their battle, they moved in unison, just once, shrouded themselves in sky, and now their battleground is the mist over the river valleys, and the fog in deepest seas.

They are battling even now.
